Building Fund Election Results: Moving Forward
First, I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote in Tuesday's Building Fund election. We appreciate the community's participation, the questions that were asked, and the conversations we've had over the past several months.
For the second time, our Building Fund proposal fell just four votes short of the required 60% approval. While the result is disappointing, we respect the decision of our voters.
Unfortunately, the building and infrastructure needs that led us to bring this proposal forward still exist. Our roofs, boilers, electrical systems, bathrooms, locker rooms, and other areas of our facility will continue to need attention. These are not projects that will simply go away, and delaying necessary maintenance can lead to larger and more expensive problems down the road.
Without a dedicated Building Fund, we will need to make some difficult decisions about how we address these needs moving forward. Many of these projects will have to continue to be paid for through our General Fund, which is also responsible for the day-to-day operations of our school. Every dollar spent on major building repairs is a dollar that is no longer available for other educational needs.
As a district, we will need to take a hard look at our priorities, determine which projects are absolutely necessary, and make decisions about what we can realistically afford. We will also continue exploring all available options to increase district revenue and find additional funding sources to help address our facility needs.
Throughout this process, we have tried to be open and transparent about the condition of our building, the challenges we face, and the reasons behind the Building Fund proposal. That commitment will continue. I also want to extend an open invitation to anyone in our community who would like to tour our school. I would be happy to walk you through the building and show you firsthand some of the maintenance projects and facility needs we have been discussing. Please feel free to contact me at the school to arrange a time. I would love to visit with any community member about our school.
Our responsibility to maintain a safe and functional school building has not changed, even though the funding proposal did not pass. We will continue working to determine the best path forward with the resources available to us.
Again, thank you to everyone who participated in both elections and took the time to learn more about our district's needs. We appreciate your continued involvement and support of Linton Public School.
All the best,
Superintendent
Michael Schirado
